Game Recap

9/7/06 Vs. Miami Dolphins In this Thursday night game, Ward hauls in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Batch, who is standing in for Ben Roethlisberger, out because of an emergency appendectomy.  He finishes with a team-high five receptions for 53 yards, even after having to sit out the preseason with a sore hamstring.  This is Ward's 120th consecutive game with a reception.   The Steelers unveil their five Super Bowl championship banners during a pregame show highlighted by fireworks and an in-stadium concert. W 28-17
9/18/06 @ Jacksonville Jaguars With Big Ben back, but not up to his usual form, Ward has just two receptions for 29 yards.  The Jaguars end the Steelers' nine-game winning streak with a 9-0 victory, the lowest-scoring game in Monday Night Football history. L 0-9
9/24/06 Vs. Cincinnati Bengals Ward has two receptions for 17 yards.  He has now caught at least one pass in his team-record 122nd consecutive game.  Carson Palmer gets the win over the team that ended his playoff run in January and forced him to endure eight months of rehabilitation. L 20-28
10/8/06 @San Diego Chargers Ward again leads the team with four receptions for 49 yards. L 13-23
10/15/06 Vs. Kansas City Chiefs Ward has five receptions for 59 yards and a long of 28. On a 13-yard pass from Roethlisberger, Ward gets a TD in the second quarter to give the Steelers a 28-0 lead.  The touchdown gives Ward 338 career points, tying Kris Brown for eighth place on the Steelers all-time list. W 45-7
10/22/06 @ Atlanta Falcons In a remarkable homecoming, Ward sets new career highs in yards (171) and touchdowns (3) in a game.  He catches eight passes for 171 yards and a career-best three TDs, including a 70-yarder in which he literally ran out of his right shoe.  Ward has now passed Kris Brown (338) for eighth place on the Steelers all-time scoring list with 356 points.  The eight catches give him 600 for his career, becoming the first Steelers player to record 600 receptions.  After Roethlisberger is knocked out of the game with a concussion, Batch comes in and delivers a 25-yard pass to Ward and the Steelers race up to the line to down the ball with 8 seconds to go. Receiver Nate Washington flinches before Batch takes the snap and throws the ball into the ground, a false-start penalty that automatically leads to the remaining seconds being run off the clock.  Ward slams his helmet to the turf in disgust.  Despite Ward's incredible play, he doesn't get what he wants most, to beat the Falcons.  The Steelers lose in OT. L 38-41 in OT
10/29/06 @ Oakland Raiders Ward has the game highs with eight catches and 81 yards.  In another frustrating loss, the Steelers lose to the Raiders. L 13-20
11/5/06 Vs. Denver Broncos Ward has seven passes for a team-high 127 yards with a long of 63 yards.  The game marks the 16th career 100-yard game for Ward, tying him for second with Louis Lipps on the Steelers' all-time list. L 20-31
11/12/06 Vs. New Orleans Saints In a game where frustration comes to a head from Joey Porter, and an emotional speech from Aaron Smith gets to the heart of the Steelers, Ward scores on a 37-yard pass from Roethlisberger to give the Steelers an early 7-0 lead.  Willie Parker gets 213 yards on 22 carries, and finishes just 5 yards short of the team-record 218 yards, set by John "Frenchy" Fuqua.  Ward has five receptions for 86 yards in the game.  The Steelers get the much needed win. W 38-31
11/19/06 @ Cleveland Browns Ward has a team high seven catches and 81 yards.  He suffers a knee injury but continues to play through the pain. He gets a 21-yard reception that helps the team keep the game-winning drive moving.  Roethlisberger shovels a 4-yard TD pass to Willie Parker with 32 seconds left, rallying the Steelers to a 24-20 win, keeping the playoff hopes alive.   W 24-20
11/26/06 @ Baltimore Ravens Ward plays, despite suffering a hyper-extended knee in the last week's game.  He has four receptions for 33 yards. Roethlisberger is sacked 9 times and for the second time this year, the Steelers are shut out. L 0-27
12/3/06 Vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers For only the second time in nine seasons, Ward doesn't play due to his knee injury. W 20-3
12/7/06 Vs. Cleveland Browns Ward is again inactive due to his knee injury. RB Parker earns the Steelers' single-game rushing record with 223 yards. Parker, the first player in Steelers history to have two 200-yard games in a season, breaks John "Frenchy" Fuqua's record of 218 yards against Philadelphia in 1970. W 27-7
12/17/06 @ Carolina Panthers Ward starts again after missing two games with a knee injury.  He catches a team-high four passes for 59 yards (14.8 avg.) with a long of 21.  OC Ken Whisenhunt's game plan to pound the Panthers with RB Parker works. While the chances are slim to making the playoffs, the Steelers push on. W 37-3
12/24/06 Vs. Baltimore Ravens Ward has a game-high eight receptions for 79 yards.  Unknown at the time, this would be Coach Cowher's last game as coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers after 15 years, and his last game at Heinz Field. A loss to the Ravens is always difficult, but this loss means the end of the run for the playoffs. L 7-31
12/31/06 @ Cincinnati Bengals Ward has five receptions for 51 yards.  He has now caught a pass in 133 consecutive games.  He rushes once for nine yards, passing Louis Lipps (388) as the Steelers' all-time leading rushing wide receiver with 394.  Ward breaks 8,000 yards receiving, joining John Stallworth as the only Steelers' players to achieve the feat.   The Steelers win it in OT, denying the Bengals a playoff berth. W 23-17 in OT
RECAP   Ward leads the team in receptions (74) and receiving yards (975), with a team-high six touchdowns.  If not for missing two games with a knee injury, Ward would have again hit the 1,000 yard mark. 8-8 Season
